West Coast LEAF is pleased to sponsor Africa Rising: The Grassroots Movement To End Female Genital Mutilation directed by Paula Heredia.

The screening takes place as part of DOXA, the documentary film festival, May 7 to 16, 2010.

WHAT: Africa Rising: The Grassroots Movement To End Female Genital Mutilation

Saturday, May 15, 12:00 pm

Pacific Cinematheque, 200-1131 Howe Street

Filmed in Kenya , Mali, Somalia, Tanzania, 2009, 62 minutes

Across Africa, women are leading a grassroots movement to end the 5,000-year-old practice of female genital mutilation. 6,000 girls are subjected to a practice called female genital mutilation (FGM) every day.

Weaving together the poignant stories of girls personally affected by FGM, the film shows how African women and men are putting an end to this human rights violation.

"A powerful look at how to eliminate, from within cultures themselves, a tragic practice. This procedure is perpetrated on young girls, the most vulnerable members of society." ~Meryl Streep

There is an upcoming screening of the documentary: Water on the Table

Explores Canada's relationship to its freshwater, arguably its most precious natural resource. The film asks the question: is water a commercial good like running shoes or Coca-Cola? Or, is water a human right like air? The film features "international water-warrior" Maude Barlow. There will also be a post-film discussion on local water issues with director Liz Marshall and Council of Canadians BC/Yukon Regional Coordinator, Harjap Grewal.
Now in its third year, Projecting Change showcases documentaries that promote positive social and environmental change on a local and international level. Following each film, inspiring speakers - ranging from artists to activists to community leaders - lead the audience in a discussion of the onscreen issues, and outline courses of actions for those wanting to learn more.
